Closing the loop for PE foam

At Abriso Jiffy, a leading manufacturer of protective packaging and insulation materials, polyethylene (PE) foam waste is turned back into high-quality raw material and into new products. The company operates a closed-loop recycling system that is fully integrated into its production process, demonstrating how circularity can work on an industrial scale.

Over the past decades, Abriso Jiffy has continuously expanded its recycling capacities and improved its processes. However, as the input material becomes increasingly contaminated, the demands on recycling technology also increase. To handle this, Abriso Jiffy uses an INTAREMA recycling system, which efficiently removes contaminants from the PE foam waste while ensuring stable processing and consistently high pellet quality.

The high-quality regranulate produced is reused in the company’s own PE foam extrusion lines. This is a clear example of how advanced recycling technologies enable manufacturers to move towards a real circular economy in plastics processing.

Circularity in action

In practice, the circular loop at Abriso Jiffy looks like this:

  1. PE foam waste is collected from customers and compacted into briquettes.
  2. The briquettes are processed into high-quality regranulate becoming new raw material.
  3. This regranulate is fed back into the extrusion process to produce new PE foam products.
  4. The finished foam sheets are delivered to customers, who use them to produce protective packaging, and the cycle begins again.
